Environmental Impact
Empire considers helping the environment a significant social issue. The manufacturing of corrugated provides a key opportunity to aid in environmental efforts since corrugated boxes make up the vast majority of materials recycled each year. Corrugated itself is made from recycled materials and mainly contains consumer waste. There are also no restrictions on what kind of corrugated can be recycled, and in fact it makes up the greatest portion of any salvaged paper grades. Corrugated packaging is durable enough where no other materials are needed, which virtually eliminates the need for any extra outside packaging.
Fuel Consumption
Empire has extended our environmental efforts in the field of fuel consumption. We purposely changed our production hours to 4 day, 10 hour shifts so that our employees would have the opportunity to drive less, and lower gas emissions. The average Empire employee commutes about 15 miles to work. With one less day of travel, our team members have put more money in their pockets and less CO2 in the air.
Because Empire also owns its own fleet of trucks, we are able to schedule the most efficient routes possible so they burn the least amount of fuel possible.
Recycling
Empire’s recycling program was designed to minimize our effect on our environment. We go out of our way to reclaim every bit of waste for recycling. Because of Empire’s recycling program, in 2008 alone over 820 tons of corrugated clippings were recycled, which translates into over 35 truckloads of waste that was sent to recycling mills. Those clippings were then able to be transformed back into new linerboard.
Ink
Empire utilizes a water purification system to process all of our discarded printing ink. All solids are removed throughout this method rendering the water contaminant free. This in turn allows the water to enter into our county’s sanitary sewage system as a harmless effluent.
